Magesh Waraan, Founder of JAI Arts and Culture

Our Founder | Magesh Waraan

Magesh Waraan is the founder of JAI Arts and Culture, driven by a deep belief that cultural education should be accessible, authentic, and meaningful for every child in Singapore.

Growing up in Singapore, Magesh was educated at Anderson Junior College and Nanyang Technological University. He realised that opportunities within the school system to deeply experience traditional Tamil and Indian art forms were limited.

As a student, Magesh had never experienced art forms such as Poi Kaal Kuthirai or Mayilattam. This sparked a simple but powerful question: “Why should our children grow up disconnected from their own cultural heritage?” This question became the foundation of JAI Arts and Culture.

A Mission Rooted in Representation and Access
  • Strong belief in increasing representation of Indian and Tamil culture within Singapore’s education landscape.
  • Desire to give students exposure, experience, and emotional connection to cultural heritage.
  • Commitment to ensuring that cultural education is not limited to textbooks but brought alive through immersive hands-on learning.
  • Belief that when children experience culture early, they develop identity, respect, and curiosity for diverse traditions.
Preserving Authenticity and Ethical Practice
  • Strong emphasis on authenticity, respect for artisans, and cultural integrity.
  • Regularly travels to India to procure materials, instruments, and crafts directly from artisans.
  • Ensures fair practices that support traditional art communities and keep endangered art forms alive.
  • Believes cultural preservation must be done responsibly, not commercially diluted.
A Personal Passion Fuelled by Purpose
  • Deep conviction that culture must be actively protected and passed on.
  • Belief that if we do not preserve our heritage today, future generations may lose meaningful cultural connection.
  • Gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to cultural continuity through education and community engagement.
  • Lives by the philosophy:
“We do not inherit culture from the past. We borrow it from the future.” Quote Icon
